What does OSHA Table D-1 require on a job site?

OSHA Table D-1 in 29 CFR 1926.51(c) sets the minimum number of toilets by crew size. A crew of 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet, and a crew of 20 or more needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.

Number of workersMinimum facilities
20 or fewer1 toilet
20 or more1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers
200 or more1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers

You can read the full rule on the OSHA 1926.51 sanitation page. This post is a plain-English guide, not legal advice.

Each of our standard units has 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal. That makes the math simple: one unit covers one seat and one urinal.

How many porta potties does a crew of 12 need?

A crew of 12 workers falls in the 20-or-fewer row of Table D-1, so the minimum is 1 toilet. One standard porta potty meets that minimum. With weekly service, 1 standard unit is a common setup for a small house framing or roofing crew.

Example: 12 workers, 5 days a week, about 2 uses each per day. That is about 120 uses a week, well under the roughly 200 uses a standard unit is rated for between pump-outs.

If your crew grows past 20, recount. The rule follows the crew on site, not the crew on the bid.

How many porta potties does a crew of 45 need?

A crew of 45 workers is over 20, so Table D-1 requires 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. 45 divided by 40 is 1.125, and you round up, so the minimum is 2 seats and 2 urinals. Two standard porta potties cover that.

Example: 45 workers, 5 days a week, about 2 uses each per day. That comes to about 450 uses a week, while 2 units rated around 200 uses each handle about 400.

The legal minimum is 2 units, but a third unit or an extra service visit keeps the tanks from getting too full. The minimum is a floor, not a target.

How many porta potties does a crew of 210 need?

A crew of 210 workers falls in the 200-or-more row, so the rule is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. 210 divided by 50 is 4.2, and you round up, so the minimum is 5 seats and 5 urinals. Five standard porta potties meet that minimum.

On a big site, spread units out. A long walk to one cluster at the far end of the site eats into crew time.

Large crews may also need more than weekly service. Tell us your crew size and shift length, and we will quote extra visits where they make sense.

What does OSHA 1926.51(f) say about handwashing?

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities for workers who apply paint, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or who work around other harmful contaminants. The facilities must be near the work and set up so workers can wash those substances off. A 2-sink hand-wash station with soap and towels is one option.

Every standard unit has hand sanitizer inside. Sanitizer does not take paint or chemicals off skin, so those trades need soap and water.

Our hand-wash stations hold about 18 gallons of fresh water. On 28-day rentals, the water gets refilled at each weekly service.

What is the OSHA toilet rule for farm field crews?

Farm field crews fall under a different rule, OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. That rule requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk of where they work. The rule covers field crews doing hand labor.

Read the OSHA 1928.110 field sanitation rule to see if your operation is covered. Harvest from September to November is when many crews are biggest.

A towable unit can follow a crew from field to field. See farm porta potty rentals for how that works.

How do job site rentals work with weekly service?

Job site porta potties are billed every 28 days at the same rate each cycle, with weekly service included. Service means pumping the tank, cleaning and sanitizing, restocking toilet paper and sanitizer and recharging the deodorizer. Next-day delivery is normal for construction.

Contractors can ask for a business account with invoicing. Learn more on our construction porta potty rental page or our long-term rental page.

Always check your contract, the general contractor and any local rules too. Some sites ask for more than the OSHA minimum.

Quick answers

Does a one-person job site need a porta potty under OSHA?

Table D-1 says 20 or fewer workers need 1 toilet, so even a one-person site counts. Section 1926.51(c)(4) exempts mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilets, so check with your safety lead.

Do OSHA toilet rules count men and women separately?

Table D-1 counts total workers. Separate facilities are not required when each toilet room locks from the inside and holds one person at a time, which is how a single porta potty works.

Can a wheelchair-accessible unit count toward the job site total?

A wheelchair-accessible unit has a toilet seat, so it counts as a toilet. It is wider and heavier than a standard unit, so make sure the spot is level and the truck can reach it.

How soon can a job site toilet be delivered?

Next-day delivery is normal for construction. Call by 12 noon Monday through Saturday for same-day delivery in Hastings and towns within about 40 miles, with a rush fee.
