How many porta potties per guest for an event?
An event needs about 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests when it lasts up to 4 hours. A 150-guest party of 4 to 8 hours needs 4 units, and the same party running past 8 hours needs 5. The chart below is the common industry planning chart used by portable restroom companies.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 4 to 8 hours | 8+ hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 250 | 5 | 6 | 8 |
| 300 | 6 | 7 | 9 |
| 400 | 8 | 10 | 12 |
| 500 | 10 | 12 | 15 |
Adding units for alcohol
When alcohol is served, add 1 unit for every 4 units on the chart, rounded up. Example: the chart says 5 units, so 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25, which rounds up to 2. Order 7 units.
Adding hand-wash stations and accessible units
Add 1 hand-wash station for every 4 units when food is served. Make at least 1 unit wheelchair-accessible. The 2010 ADA Standards (section 213.2) call for at least 5% of clustered portable units, and never fewer than 1, to be accessible. See the U.S. Access Board ADA Standards and our wheelchair-accessible unit.
How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA requires 1 toilet for a crew of 20 or fewer workers. Above 20 workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and above 200 workers it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. These numbers come from 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1.
| Workers | Minimum facilities | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet | 12 framers = 1 unit |
| 21 to 199 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 45 workers = 2 units |
| 200 or more | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers | 210 workers = 5 units |
Read the official text: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. This is the legal minimum. Our recommendation for crews over 15 is a second unit so workers are not waiting. Handwashing rules are in 1926.51(f); see hand-wash stations and the construction rental page.
How many toilets does a farm field crew need?
A farm field crew needs 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 workers, placed within a quarter-mile walk of where they work. That is OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. A 35-person detasseling crew needs 2 toilets and 2 hand-wash stations.
Read OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. Towable units make it easier to follow a crew across fields; see farm and harvest rentals.
This page explains common planning numbers and federal minimums. It is not legal advice. Confirm requirements with your permit office, venue or safety officer.
Sizing questions
How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?
A 100-guest event up to 4 hours needs 2 standard units, 4 to 8 hours needs 3, and 8 hours or more needs 4. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served.
How many porta potties for 200 people at a wedding with a bar?
A 200-guest wedding of 4 to 8 hours starts at 5 units. Alcohol adds 1 unit for every 4, which rounds up to 2 more, for 7 units total. Make at least 1 of the 7 wheelchair-accessible.
How many toilets does OSHA require for 25 workers?
OSHA Table D-1 requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers once a crew passes 20, so 25 workers need 1 seat and 1 urinal. A standard unit has both, so 1 unit meets the minimum; many crews add a second for less waiting.
Do I need a hand-wash station too?
Add 1 hand-wash station for every 4 units when food is served. On construction sites, OSHA 1926.51(f) requires handwashing where workers handle harmful materials.
Does a house bathroom count toward the total?
A house bathroom helps, but one indoor toilet and a septic system should not carry a crowd. Many hosts count the house bathroom as covering family and use the chart for guests.
