How many hand-washing stations do I need?

Plan on 1 hand-washing station for every 4 toilets when food is served. A party with 2 or 3 porta potties and a buffet needs 1 station. A fair with 12 toilets and food trucks needs 3 stations. Each station has 2 sinks, so 2 people wash at once.

Set the station between the toilets and the food line. People wash more when the sink is in plain sight.

Count toilets first with our guide to how many porta potties you need. Then add stations by the 1-per-4 rule. Busy events with alcohol often need an extra station near the bar, too.

Does my jobsite need a hand-washing station?

Construction sites must provide handwashing under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f). Workers need soap or a cleanser, water and towels where they work. One 2-sink station beside the job site toilets covers a small crew. Long-term station rentals run from $135 per 28 days with weekly refills.

The rule is stricter when crews handle paint, lead or other harmful materials. Read the full text at OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f). Farms have their own rule: 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers.

The legal rule is a minimum. Ask your general contractor or safety officer what your site needs. Our construction porta potty rental page covers crew toilet counts.

How does a hand-wash station work with no water hookup?

The station holds about 18 gallons of fresh water in its own tank. Each foot pump pushes water out of the spout. Used water drains into a separate tank inside the stand. Soap and paper towels mount on the frame, so the station needs no hose, drain or outlet.

Because the station is self-contained, you can set it in a field, a parking lot or a backyard. The station needs a firm, flat spot within about 10 feet of where the truck can stop.

Wind can push a light stand over on open ground. On jobsites, open lots and farm ground, we stake or strap the station at no charge. Keep the station a few steps from the toilet doors so lines do not block each other.

How does a station compare to a deluxe unit or trailer?

A hand-wash station adds 2 outside sinks for less money than a deluxe unit, which starts at $325. A station plus a standard unit starts at $300 for an event weekend in Hastings. A restroom trailer starts at $1,250 and needs power. The table compares all 5 options.

When is a hand-wash station the wrong choice?

A hand-wash station is the wrong choice during hard freezes, about November through March, when water in the tank can freeze. In a hard freeze, we swap the water station for hand sanitizer. A station also cannot replace a toilet. For long, busy events, 18 gallons can run out before pickup.

For a multi-day fair, ask about daily or every-other-day refills. A station that runs dry is worse than none, so size up rather than down. Prices for every unit and fee sit in the porta potty rental cost guide.

How much are two hand wash stations for a two-week job?

Each station starts at $135 per 28 days, with weekly refills. A two-week job pays the 28-day rate, and billing stops on the pickup date.

The sinks sit at adult height. Small kids may need a hand or a sturdy step. The foot pumps are easy to press.

What happens to the hand-wash station in winter?

In hard freezes, about November through March, we swap the water station for hand sanitizer so nothing freezes and cracks.
